lyrics

She stares out the window

Sees the boats, sees the docks
Sees waves trying to disappear
Like pages torn from a book
Then cast to the wind
Just to break on a rock
While he drowns his sorrows
And looks at the clock
But he knows that it’s too late
The boat lurches then rocks
And he almost had to wait.

She told her self this story
Enough times for it to be true
Now all that separates them
Is that black Atlantic blue
Which is scrawled out between them
Claiming a life that can change and renew
She hears her father’s voice
In the gloom
He takes off his belt and tells her
“I can show you something true”
And she always had to wait.

Now she still sits by that window
She’s anchored to her blood
The dockyard’s just a memory
Which has thickened to mud
While an organ grinder sparks
A feeling she never understood
Her mother’s voice calls out to her
What she would and should and could
If she’d only found her partner
Joined the Arc
Braved the flood
She’d never have to wait.
